Empowering the Future: Celebrating International Girls in ICT Day!

A MESSAGE FROM US

Greetings!

Every year on April 25th, the world comes together to commemorate International Girls in ICT Day, a global initiative aimed at encouraging young women to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

This day emphasizes the importance of gender equality and diversity in the tech industry and highlights women’s contributions to the field.   Just to mention a few, we celebrate pioneers like Ada Lovelace, who is considered the world’s first computer programmer, and Grace Hopper, who developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. These women have paved the way for future generations of women in tech.

What is this year’s campaign theme?
This year’s theme, ‘Leadership,’  underscores the critical need for strong female role models in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.  It focuses on fostering leadership skills, promoting digital literacy, and encouraging girls to pursue careers in ICT.

Despite women now holding 40% of high-skill occupations worldwide, their representation in ICT-related fields remains disproportionately low.  The theme is a call to action to overcome these challenges and foster empowerment and leadership development for a more equitable future.

DotConnectAfrica Group and Miss.Africa Digital has been a beacon of hope, promoting and implementing ICT infrastructure, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship across Africa for over a decade.

Particularly relevant to this International ICT Day is our widely acclaimed Miss Africa Digital Seed-Fund grant Award program. This transformative initiative has not only touched the lives of over 15,000 girls in 15 African countries but has also ignited a spark of confidence in their digital skills, leading them to start their own businesses and become community leaders.

When invited to speak on her work at the Crans Montana Forum in Spain in 2018, our CEO and Founder of the Miss. Africa Digital program, Sophia Bekele reminded us that, “We need to address the gender digital divide to fully bridge the economic divide.”

The impact we have made together is just the beginning, and it’s a testament to the power of empowerment and opportunity initiatives that promote digital inclusion, foster innovation, and ensure robust cybersecurity measures.  Our dedication to driving positive change and building a more connected and prosperous Africa is unwavering.  We do this through strategic partnerships and investments in cutting-edge technologies, ensuring a brighter future for all.

Happy International Girls in ICT Day!!
