Miss.Africa Voices spoke to Gadabor Afua Marian Edem about her experience during the Miss.Africa Digital sponsored training at Kumasi Hive;

Give a general experience with Miss. Africa Digital Sponsored, Kumasi Hive training and how your digital skills were enhanced. What was most challenging?

All I had in common with graphic design before I started training with Kumasi Hive was interest. I tried grasping some of the design concepts on my own and familiarising myself with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop but it was really challenging and not very straightforward.

On hearing about free Graphic design lessons fully funded Miss.Africa Digtial at Kumasi Hive, I knew that was it for me. It was a challenging and exciting month which pushed me and made me proficient at using graphic design tools.

How did the training enhance your perception of involvement of women in technology?

My perception of involvement of women in technology has been enhanced. The training made me realise that not only passion is required but being focused and sacrificing some time and fun. It also made me realise that asking for ideas from others and Google wouldn’t harm anybody. That’s where all the knowledge is. And practice! Once one possesses all the above listed, I don’t think gender can hinder anything.

The other ladies I trained with did amazingly well. That alone was enough to make me realise that women can do anything they set their minds to.

Do you see opportunities for your future from the training?

 Yes! There are definitely opportunities for my future from the training. Graphic design is broad and is a basic means of communication used by almost every individual or organisation hence so many opportunities are available.

Give us a professional instance during the training that remains a landmark in your career profession.

I designed a package and manual for an educational kit for kids and made myself some money. Aside making money, putting smiles on the faces of people brings me a lot of satisfaction.

Outline your take on the future of women technology in Africa

Women technology in Africa is very possible. As I said in (b) above, women can do anything they set their minds to. It has a lot to do with our mind set as women in Africa. We just have to be bold and slay the fear and misconceptions about technology.

Miss.Africa Digital Voices is a regular online journal that presents women in tech experiences, opinions and observations. These stories come from DotConnectAfrica Internship Alumni and other Women who are leading the tech-preneurship fronts in their own ecosystems. The Miss.Africa Voices also serves to encourage more girls & women to get involved in STEM careers through our Miss.Africa Digital Program.
